Sin is a problem that has plugged every culture since the beginning of time. Different cultures have different opinions about what the sin is. Sin is anything you do for your own pleasure, which you place before God in your life. There is no “ultimate” sin, nor is there a worse sin than others. Sin is sin. Sometimes it can be hard to handle, so everyone copse with their sins in different ways.

“The Scarlet Letter” struggle with the emotions and behavior associated with sin in an environment that makes no effort to deliver them from their suffering, but only to drive them deeper into feelings of hopelessness. This work is allegorical because every character in it demonstrates at least one aspect surrounding the sin.

In his book Nathaniel Hawthorne tells a story where a young woman has had an adulterous relationship with the respected priest in the puritan community. Her sin was torn out at a public for all townspeople to see. For Hester, sin forces her into isolation from the society and even from herself.

More than a tale of sin, a Scarlet Letter is a love story. We realize it after the forest scene with Hester and the minister. Having plans to run away together, Arthur and Hester show the reader that their love has overcome the distance and time away from each other. In addition, this love explains why Hester would never reveal her fellow sinner when she asked about it on the scaffolding.

Through it all, it also illustrates the ability of the sin to produce purity. So she was isolated with her mother, however, Pearl finds joy in the nature that surround her and in her company. Only she knows that her mother has to keep her scarlet letter on her all the time, and that to take it off is wrong.

For all the characters, Hawthorne's novel illustrates how can escalate to encompass one’s self so that the true humans behind the sin are lost. This is what makes this novel not only the story of love and hate, sin and purity, good and evil. All of these is combined and makes a powerful historical tragedy as well.
